Born in 1983 in London, of an English mother and a Gambian father, she comes from one of the main lines of griots in West Africa. She is the granddaughter of a master griot, Amadu Bansang Jobarteh, and the cousin of Toumani Diabaté. She is also the sister of diaspora Kora player Tunde Jegede.
